Nowadays, what are the factors that cause students who lacking in the area of critical thinking skills. In the two articles, “Cutting and Pasting” by Brent Staples and “Has College Become too Easy” by Clarence Pages, which summarized how important that each students can think critically when they are writing their papers. Although Mr.Page has written about the idea of creating a “college-level GED”, Mr.Staples article is more easier to understand the content of critical thinking.
In the article, “Has college become too easy”, Mr.Page was taking about the ides of creating a “college-level GED”. People who did not graduate from college were supporting the idea. On the other hand, some people disagree because the program will not help the student to develop critical thinking skills without a campus life. One study, the Collegiate Learning Assessment (CLA), gives the freshmen and senior students a 90 minutes test and collects data on how much they learned. In Mr.Staples’ article claims students should think critically and should use their own thoughts in writing a paper in order to understand the context. Teachers want to know how well a student can write a paper without any help. They will get a better understanding if students are learning in school. In Mr.Page’s article, many people think students will get a lack of critical thinking skills without a campus life. The “college-level GED” program does not provide how to teach students to write critically instead just gives them a test. The program will end up an increase rate of dropout in every academic year. Students are rather to take the online test instead staying in the college for about 4-5 years. Even though, some students did not gained a lot of knowledge in the campus life, they are definitely better off compared to the people who just doing their GED
