“The woods are lovely, dark and deep, but I have promises to keep and miles to go before I sleep (Robert Frost)”. In the fictional novel Hatchet, by Gary Paulsen, a thirteen year old boy, Brian, is faced with challenges he must overcome in order to mature and grow. Brian is on a plane to see his father because his parents are divorced and then the pilot has a heart attack and strands Brian. He ends up surviving in the Canadian wilderness and is changed when he gets back to civilization where there are many luxuries. Conflict helps progress the story the most because without conflict, there wouldn’t be any problems for Brian to overcome. Then, Brian becomes a changed person who learns from his mistakes, which is also one of Hatchets major themes.
