Pericles and Lincoln’s Great Speeches Two very famous speeches have impacted the world with their diction and purpose. Pericles’ “Funeral Oration” and also Abraham Lincoln’s “Gettysburg Address” were both spoken at a public service for those who had been killed in the war. For Pericles this speech occurred in 431 BCE at the end of the first year of the Peloponnesian War. Later in time Abraham Lincoln spoke in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania about four months after the Battle of Gettysburg. While each speech commemorated those who had died in the war, they also inspired the remaining people to continue fighting and finish the war.
The first scene also portrays police brutality when the police show up to the drug house with a vehicle using a huge tank-like battery ram to raid the house. This military style raid is just an example of the unjustified and brutal attacks on blacks throughout the movie. The police assert their authority using power relations, not law enforcement. Another issue depicted in this movie was the
Social Exclusion and Harassment Hate is a passionate dislike for someone or something. It is a word that expresses a strong emotion and is shown in many ways. It can be shown physically, mentally, emotionally, and sometimes very harshly. Most people show it to people and/or objects. In a “Scary First Day” hate is shown through harassment towards “Little Rock 9,” and in “Lupita Manana” hate is revealed with social exclusion towards Lupita.
Throughout the book, the author explores the variety of ways hate can tear communities apart. Exploring how people can not even realize the destruction hate and violence have done to their communities as they've gone numb to it. The book explores cylces of hate and injustice and the people that experience them. This explains the title,
Have you ever seen something so horrifying, so disheartening, that you couldn’t even bring yourself to look away? Well, that was most of the population on September 11, 2001. Most were absolutely stunned, not able to even process what they just witnessed. In “From Terror to Hope,” by Kristin Lewis, we learn about a young girl who witnessed the September 11 attacks. Not only were thousands of innocent lives taken on that day, but soon after, a certain religion called Islam was attacked.
Mental illness significantly affects many around the world. In fact, about four-hundred and fifty million people worldwide suffer from one or more of the different known mental illnesses. That is one in every four people. Resolutions are vehemently being sought to protect schools from possible attacks and to objectively eradicate deadly school shootings altogether. Commonly, security officers are placed in schools in hopes that increased surveillance will inhibit violent outbreaks (Crawford and Burns 2016). Mixed evaluations have been found in association with security officers, while some benefits reportedly transpire, experiences of disparaging consequences remain a regrettable reality as well (Crawford and Burns 2016). Additionally, active shooter drills routinely occur at schools across the nation, however, as Jillian Peterson and James Densley report in their CNN article titled, “The Usual Approach to School Security Isn’t Working,” studies indicate that
Armed with 23 weapons and thousands of rounds of ammunition, Stephen Paddock opened fire at a concert in Las Vegas on Sunday, October 1st. The massacre left 58 people dead and 489 people injured, making it the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history. When nationwide tragedies occur, the country often divides to search for a target of blame; the aftermath of the Las Vegas massacre has proved no different. It has triggered an even fiercer debate across the nation about the already-raging argument over gun control law. It has become habitual for Americans’ support of stricter gun regulations to grow in the wake of mass shootings; among those is Junior Lorenzo Bacalso.
Chicago has had its ups and downs in the cities violent history, but early 2016 to present has been an exception. Chicago increased in homicides by 59 percent in 2016 and it has only become worse since then with a 29 percent increase in just the first few months of 2017 (Asher, FiveThirtyEight.com; Ford, The Atlantic). It is obvious that something needs to be done, but so far there have not been any major changes made or drastic measures taken in order to improve Chicago’s current state of being. Right now, the three most predominant causes are Chicago’s Police, Chicago’s many gangs, and firearms, hand guns in particular. If the city wants to make any improvements whatsoever then it needs act decisively on gangs and guns, start using different
Alcohol related violence is becoming an increasingly large problem in Australia. One of the main forms of violence that has already claimed the lives of over 90 people in Queensland is the “king hit”. A king hit is “when a single blow to the head causes a victim to fall to the ground unconscious, either from the punch itself or the impact between the head and the ground. This can result in fatal skull fractures and subdural hematomas” (Pilgrim, Gerostamoulos, & Drummer, 2014). The problem of alcohol fuelled violence has escalated to the point that the Queensland government has passed new legislation that will reduce trading hours for licensed premises and restrict the sale of alcohol past 2am ("Overview of the Tackling Alcohol-Fuelled Violence Legislation Amendment Act 2016 for licensees | Queensland Government", 2016).
