In the book, The Hunger Games, one of the main events is when Katniss volunteers for her sister, Prim, to participate in the annual Hunger Games. After reading this event, I was very surprised. I noticed that Katniss surprised herself by saying she would volunteer, but then quickly recovered once she remembered that the reaping would be shown on television. “…this is upsetting me and I don’t want to cry. When they televise the replay of the reapings tonight, everyone will make note of my tears, and I’ll be marked as an easy target.
Much like Faber to Montag, Haymitch provided assistance with his long and extensive wisdom about the society he lives in with Katniss. He was a mentor to her and he helped her understand why the world has to hold these Games. More importantly he shared his own thoughts on the matters at hand, much like Faber did with Montag. Haymitch was there for Katniss because he told her the truth, which is something she needed while living in the dystopian society

In Suzanne Collins’ novel, The Hunger Games Katniss’ relationship with Peeta, Rue, and Thresh is important to her story of survival. Firstly, Peeta is crucial to Katniss’ survival in The Hunger Games because he sets up intertwined lovers. As stated by Katniss Everdeen herself, “At some point, you have to stop running and turn around and face whoever wants you dead. The hard thing is finding the courage to do it.” Both Beowulf and Katniss had to put aside their pride, remain selfless and have the courage and bravery to save their people on multiple occasions. These two heroes endured many hardships, challenges and rough patches, but they came out victorious in the end. As well as the epic of Beowulf, The Hunger Games is an excellent example of the twelve- Step Vogler model of the Monomyth.

Some of the prominent archetypes in The Hunger Games include the mentor or the “wise old man” character who is Haymitch, a veteran and former champion of the games, and Cinna, Katniss’ stylist. Haymitch can be considered as a mentor since he guides Katniss by giving her advice on how to survive the harsh and cruel environment in the Capitol and by telling her about the cruel truth of the backwards and corrupt system governing and sponsoring the Hunger Games. By revealing the brutal reality of the games, Haymitch toughens Katniss with his misogynist opinions while Cinna encourages Katniss on an emotional level and becomes a trustworthy figure for Katniss in the ruthless Capitol. In turns, this helps Katniss to grow an emotional connection with Cinna, something she and Haymitch don’t share. Another archetype is the Capitol itself, which plays a shadow figure in the movie. .

Moreover, it proves that he is more than capable of surviving the games. Another quote to further provide evidence explains how Haymitch uses his common sense and experience to help Katniss justify her innocence to the Capitol after her act of defiance, which is why they made her more girly to look more vulnerable.

“I volunteer as tribute!” When Katniss realized that it was Prim that was called she immediately said that. Katniss loves Prim so much that she put herself in danger just to save her. At that point in the book, Katniss would rather die than to watch Prim have to go into the Hunger Games. In many of the chapters of The Hunger Games people say, “ May the odds be ever in your favor.”
