Nathan Freibott Period 6 2/2/24 Hazel Bryan Expository Essay: Final Introduction September 4th, 1957, a day that went down in infamy. Hazel Bryan on this fateful day made the decision to scream obscenities at Elizabeth Eckford, one of the teenage girls from the Little Rock Nine. The consequences of her actions are nigh innumerable, having this incident, which occurred at 15, haunt her for life. Whether the issues she faced were irrationally cruel is a topic of contention, with some believing that the consequences she faced after the incident were wildly blown out of proportion. Some consequences of this day were the ostracization of Bryan from the Little Rock Nine, extreme backlash from the public and resentment from the people who were once closest to her. She had become friends with Elizabeth Eckford, one of the students from the Little Rock Nine, and the person she’d been screaming at in the photo taken. They were friends until the public backlash overwhelmed Bryan and she became reclusive from the public as a result. Everybody else from the Little Rock Nine ignored and didn’t associate Bryan. The fact that she got shunned by the people she was trying to make amends with made the cuts to her heart feel even deeper. This was just the first tip off to how the once pampered and sheltered young woman would feel the most wounded and susceptible. Begrudging Public: Warranted? The Little Rock Nine’s ostracization wasn’t the only thing Bryan had to deal with. As soon as the image of her screaming obscenities was released to the public, the backlash was nothing short of catastrophic. There was dissention among the family which had only continued to fester the longer the image was available to public eyes.
