Health care, entrepreneurship, and ambassadorship are the core tenets of my desired career. These aspects look to tackle the problems that lie within health care and health care research for minorities. There is a lack of knowledge on some of the diseases and illnesses that plague minorities. This can be attributed to a variety of things. For one, there are not enough research samples from desired minority populations due to stigma and there is little to no interest in exploring the why’s and how’s of why some minorities are susceptible to some diseases.
Due to the reasons outlined above, I believe that the ARCHES experience will advance my goal of entering medicine. Furthermore, I believe it is important to recruit passionate minorities into fields such as this one so questions that have been unanswered for years can begin to have more clarity. I have been speaking publicly at bi-weekly GlobeMed at Howard University general body meetings since the fall of my freshman year. In doing so, I have refined my public speaking skills in order for them to become sharp. My various roles in the African Student’s Association have fostered a strong cultural competence that is necessary when going into a career with a wide range cultural interaction, such as health care. As an undergraduate student, it is important to have my priorities in order and practice good time management. That being said, my activeness in a multitude of organizations such as the ones noted above and others, such as Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and African Business Club require me to evenly split my time so as to not lack in certain aspects of extracurricular activities or academics.
