As a community nutritionist, I developed a feel and confidence for how to educate and counsel community members of the Pascua Yaqui Tribe as part of the Diabetes Prevention and Treatment Program. I am a Native American and part of this tribe and therefore was so enthused to be part of their health care team. Being fresh out of college and given only a vague idea of the expectations of the position, I gathered all my available resources and set about the task of independently creating a successful education and counseling program. As I learned the ropes and increased my knowledge base, I felt the need to develop healthy cooking classes for my clients. The goal was to show my clients how to cook delicious, affordable and nutrient dense meals while catering to their specific culture preferences.

I joined because I wanted to understand the community that I would be taking part in for the entirety of my undergraduate degree. The community itself was within Central Valley, California, which was also known to be largely medically underserved and economically disadvantaged. I was able to witness this firsthand, as a college student focused on pursuing medicine, the impact of healthcare disparities, and social determinants of health. These experiences have instilled in me a commitment to serving and empowering marginalized communities. By actively engaging with other campus-based organizations and promoting health education initiatives, I aspire to contribute to RFU’s community outreach efforts and foster positive change in the communities
The event was the YMCA event, and my sub-group and I worked at the station called, “Move it, Move it, Move it.” The YMCA event is at San Jose, where different age groups at the YMCA facility where they can come join the event that my team and I created. Family and their children can come enjoy the stations that the team had created. The stations were arts and craft, making pledges, games, and physical activity.
A big part of the grant money was invested in creating a unique project which purpose is to involve community agencies that could work directly with this culturally complex community. The name of the project was The Border Health Strategic Initiative or Border Health ¡SI! (Cohen et al. 2005) However, the evaluation of this initiative showed the need to enhance it by implementing promotores (health workers) that could educate the community and also that could interact with the University personnel. An existing curriculum was modified to fit the needs of the targeted community.
The Healthy People 2020 is a valuable resource. It provides information on research study, initiatives, and assess to the various health service available in the community. The Healthy People 2020 goal is to promote a better quality of life for all age group and eliminate disparities. The idea of trying to resolve a health issues by implanting a 10year plan is huge task, but a worthy cause. I had a great time during the health promotions lesson in UNI 101. While in the class, I was able to learn about fad diets, proper nutrition, and making healthy decisions. Being a student at Frostburg State University has allowed me to participate in a number of student organizations as well as leader positions and experiences. Depression is the number one mental illness on college campuses, something that many people do not know. The stress that college students are placed under can cause depression and other mental health issues, such as anxiety, eating disorders, self harm, and other clinical mental health conditions. The majority of college campuses have counseling centers for students who need them, but they are underused due to social stigmas against seeking help.
