One of the men, Charles Marlow, tells his fellow sailors about his journey into the inner parts of Africa as an agent for his Company, a Belgian ivory trading firm. Marlow describes his experiences with Europeans horribly mistreating the natives to exploit them for their ivory. He hears of a man by the name of Kurtz, who is well known for his ability to collect copious amount of ivory. He is a British seaman who is infatuated with traveling which leads to him onto the company’s steamboat. Kurtz: A god-like figure to the natives. He is charismatic and mysterious in the fact that most details about him are secondary. Kurtz has an appetite for ivory which is his downfall. He dies from becoming tremendously ill. The Harlequin: A Russian man who Kurtz has taken in as his disciple. He worships Kurtz, much like the natives do. Marlow condones his babbling because he has great information on Kurtz. He earned his nickname by dressing in colorful and patched clothing. The Intended: She is Kurtz’s fiancée who lives in Belgium while Kurtz sails off to collect ivory. Although she is intended to marry Kurtz, she knows very little about him. She is completely infatuated with Kurtz, without fully knowing who he really was. The Brickmaster: Works at the Central Station, but never actually makes a brick because he is waiting on materials that never arrive. He spies for the corporate in hopes of getting a higher position.
