Everyone in school were inflicted with pain after the news of Rob’s death. Laurie Halse Anderson conveys a lonely mood through the use of imagery, dialogue, and tone in her book “Speak”. Throughout the novel, the reader sees the struggles of a freshman girl named Melinda after she was raped over the summer. Laurie Halse Anderson uses imagery to create a lonely mood. “Built-in shelves filled with dusty textbooks and a few bottles of bleach… A cracked mirror tils over a sink littered with dead roaches crotched together with cobwebs.” This quote helps the reader create an image in their head of a dirty, forgotten place where it makes the reader feel the same feelings of loneliness that Melinda felt in the story.
“ ‘You didn’t have to make Ben die,’ I muttered before I began to cry.” In the novel The Red Kayak by Priscilla Cummings, Brady, the protagonist, uses many different methods for coping with the challenges he faced such as the death of Ben DiAngelo. Some of the times where the reader saw how Brady coped with the intense situations he encountered were after the accident, when he discovered what J.T. and Digger did, and during the separation among his friends. The first time the way Brady’s coping method was shown was after he discovered Ben’s death when Brady was stressed out. Brady blamed himself for what happened to Ben, and he kept all of his feelings boiling up inside.
“And We Still Rise: The Trials of Tribulations of 12 inner City Students” Corwin records the lives of twelve incredible students during their high school years. Corwin takes us on an excursion in the lives of these young people who battles everyday life issues with some characters dealing with gang violence, to some dealing with domestic abuse. Corwin shows how they overcame their obstacles and went on to do great things as a student in their high school. The fact that these young people were able to rise above their terrible conditions, gives me inspiration and motivation to do my best in school and to fight for success and equality in life/society.
When we read a piece of literature, we can get so impressed by a story that we do not pull the valuable life lessons from the book. We can use literary theory to pull out those life lessons to use them in our daily lives. For example, when reading the Scar Boys, we see the overarching theme of how loneliness can cause us to seek validation in places we should not. The outcast and the mentor character archetypes, the symbolic storm archetype, and the journey situational archetype evolve the theme of loneliness in the novel. `In The Scar Boys by Len Vlahos, published in 2014, we see a young adult fiction novel focusing on loneliness and coming of age.
For my poetry paper I have chosen the poem "Kill the Day" by Donald Hall. A poem that goes through the process of what it is like to grieve for that significant other that passes away. The way Hall describes grieving makes it sounds as if there are stages to it. These stages can be categorized as denial, sorrow and anger and finally, acceptance. Each stage brings its own obstacles and challenge for one to deal with.
Keiski reflects, “To get rid of these feelings and find peace with myself, I had to live through them” (96). Keiski had to dig within her mind to reconcile and feel at ease finally with the situation. Functioning after a friend’s attempted suicide negatively affected the spirit of Keiski and she unintentionally ejected herself from the world around her to cope with the trauma. She had to find ways to eradicate the pain and eliminate the hold that her friend’s suicide had on her life. Calming down and staying aware of what happened, Keiski realized she alienated herself from the people around her.
Wishing for death is contrary to living with her child, and the disparity between those ideas is strong enough to ‘rip out’ her heart. Even so, the woman still chooses suicide, demonstrating the complete and utter hopelessness she felt. Next, the man’s last conversation with the boy before he dies shows hope manifesting the sake of survival. Here, the man’s health is failing substantially and he knows he will soon die.
When people are traumatized by an event they are pushed to experience the five stages of grief. The “Gospel”, by Philip Levine and “the boy detective loses love”, by Sam Sax both use characters that are going through one of the stages of grief. Levine and Sax both explain the thoughts and process of what a person thinks when they go through these stages with imagery. Levine uses symbolism, a sad tone, and a set setting in “Gospel” to illustrate that grieving takes you into a depth of thoughts. Sax uses anaphoras, an aggressive tone, and an ambiguous setting to convey that grieving takes you into a tunnel of anger and rage.
Losing a loved one is a challenging obstacle for many people to overcome. Sometimes the feeling resulting from losing a loved one can only be overcome through spending time with current loved ones. In the short story “The Leap,” written by Louise Erdrich, the mother, Anna, experiences the loss of many people close to her, and must keep her living loved ones closer in order to cope. Erdrich portrays this by utilizing flashbacks throughout the story to demonstrate how Anna has coped with her past trauma through interactions with her remaining loved ones over the years. Anna’s many encounters with losing people close to her have allowed and required her to connect with her current loved ones in order to cope with the trauma and turmoil of losing
Different Types of Loss Great writers can impact a reader’s emotion. Short stories like “Gwilan’s Harp” by Ursula K. Le Guin, “The Washwoman” by Isaac Singer, and “The Last Leaf” by O. Henry influences the reader’s emotions due to the loss the characters of each story experience. In “Gwilan’s Harp,” Gwilan loses not only her husband, but also things that she cherishes the most. However, even if Gwilan did lose some of the things that she loves, she later learns to appreciate other things in her life. Also, in “The Washwoman,” the author reveals a loss of a faithful and persevering servant and friend.
