ometimes relationships can be confusing… just ask Lyla McAfee. The book, Heat of Moment, by Lauren Barnholdt, is about an average girl named Lyla. Lyla is in her last year of high school and she’s so excited about going on her twelfth grade trip. The excitement dies down as many problems begin the day of her class’s departure. Long story short: she’s late for her trip, she gets in a big argument with her boyfriend, and she starts falling for another guy. As you can probably tell already, the theme of the book is relationships.
The first quote that relates to the theme of relationships is, “I don’t know why, but I don’t want Derrick to know that Beckett drove me here. Not that Derrick would care. Derrick is not the type of guy who gets jealous. And he doesn’t need to be. I love Derrick.” This relate to the theme because Derrick is her boyfriend, and at this point in the story she and Derrick do not have conflict. They are at the airport waiting for their plane to Florida. They are in a place in their relationship where they both value each other a great deal. It’s not like that so much later in the story.
