In the Night Circus, Erin Morgenstern alludes the character Hector to the devil to reveal the actions of abusive fathers in society. His character embodies the devil by the way he acts not only to his daughter, Celia, but by the way he acts to his students. Hector spends his lifetime gambling the lives of others and continues to do so even in his ghost-like state. There is no remorse in his actions and abuse towards Celia. As Hector “slit his daughter’s fingertips open… watching wordlessly as she cried” it’s clear was indifferent to his damaging Celia’s physical state but also her mental state (34). The way he treats Celia also alludes to the way the devil tested Job in the Bible, the devil showed no restraint in hurting Job just like Hector’s
