Helen Marie Gurley Brown was an American author, journalist, and businesswoman. Her breakthrough in society came when she became an editor of Cosmopolitan magazine in which she worked as the Editor-in-chief for about 32 years. Gurley was born on February 18 in 1992 in Green Forest, Arkansas to the parents, Cleo Fred Sisco and Ira Marvin Gurley. During Gurley’s first ten years of age, she lived a normal childhood. However, Gurley’s tragic childhood began when her father died in a tragic elevator accident. After her father died when she was ten, Helen Gurley was raised by her widowed mother and throughout her early life she developed a liking for writing and dancing (Helen Brown Biography). Throughout Gurley’s early life, she demonstrated strong leadership and social skills. For instance, when Helen Gurley was studying in High School, she was voted president of the Scholarship Society, and Gurley was known for her extraordinary writing skills. After graduation she attended Texas State College for Women now known as Texas Woman’s University. Unfortunately, she had to withdraw after one semester for financial reasons. Especially in a society were the bosses were mainly men, Helen wanted women to become independent and successful in the business world. Also, the book encouraged women to be more open about sex, and it also stated that it was all right to have sex during or even before marriage.
