While reading “Ramona” one of the overarching themes in the novel is the mistreatment of Native Americans. The reason that Helen Hunt Jackson was able to write so much on this subject without having people criticize her for a biased view, is because the story of “Ramona” is based on the treatment of Native Americans. The prejudices that affected them in the 1800’s was horrific. The Native American were moved off their homelands, forced into a situation of being put into camps, and a lack of rights. This lack of rights is where Helen Hunt Jackson attempt to expose this mistreatment and abuse to the light. The character of Alessandro is based on a real tale of Native American mistreatment. In the 1800’s Native Americans had a lack of rights, respect, and control over the situation that the government put them in. This is seen through throughout most of the story which was a reflection on how the Native Americans were treated. Summarizing Steve Lechs article on the subject of Juan Diego is that Juan Diego was a Cahuilla Indian who was known as a sheep shearer and laborer.What happens next explains the kind of world Native Americans had to live in. After an Sam Temple’s horse went missing he went to Juan Diego’s home killed him after several shots to the chest and head from the doorway. What happened after that? Did Sam Temple go to jail? No. Sam Temple did not. Since the only witness to the murder was Juan Diego was his wife, Sam Temple got away with murder after saying Juan Diego came out of the door with a knife.
