My motivation to become an associate at Helping Hands Clinic stems from my lifelong goal of becoming a psychiatrist and the desire to help others in multiple aspects of their lives. In the past I have volunteered at my local elementary school, church, and a few other independent organizations. My experiences with volunteering have inspired me to work with those who are less fortunate and broadcast the importance of receiving psychiatric care. My exposure to depression and anxiety also induces an urge in me to become an advocate for those suffering because I personally know how much a chemical imbalance, as well as unforeseen circumstances, can affect an individual. This specific clinic provoked my interest due to the fact that Helping Hands Clinic is the first and only free full-psychiatric medical program with onsite pharmaceuticals in the area. By volunteering here, I can gain exposure to different aspects of mental healthcare, including patient care, treatment planning, and collaboration with other healthcare professionals. This opportunity would help me develop necessary skills such as problem-solving abilities, empathy, and good communication. When working with the homeless, it is important to take a different approach in administering healthcare. Most members in the homeless community may not trust figures of authority because of the lack of concern and injustice they have received throughout their lifetime. Regardless of the events leading up to treatment, it is my duty as a future physician to provide equitable healthcare and friendship to those in need. Many of the most vulnerable people in society face multiple barriers when trying to gain healthcare access due to the lack of a stable address, insurance, or transportation.
