Helping Honduras Children

About ten percent of the 100 million children living in the streets around the world are found in Central America (“Street Children Statistics” 2). Honduran children are being abandoned right this second and will spend the rest of their short lives attempting to survive on the streets. Poverty is abounding in Honduras, and families cannot support their children because of it. Children face the dangerous streets, and they must attempt to survive without support, food, and money. They live their lives afraid of gangs, abuse, and starvation. Child abandonment is a major issue in Honduras, but one organization known as Helping Honduras Kids is working to provide better lives to all the abandoned children trying to survive on their own.

In the article, “What Drives Us,” the organization describes its extraordinary program, and how they are helping these children. Their goal is to enable the children to become responsible, healthy, and fulfilled Christian adults. They provide education for all the children through their Jungle School, where the kids are taught about the love Christ has for them and how to pray. The organization also equips the children with food and shelter. They have multiple homes and three meals a day. Not only contributing to the children’s physical needs, Helping Honduras Kids also endows the children in their spiritual needs. They make prayer a priority in school, and they attend church several times a week. They want to make sure the kids know that the Lord has a purpose for their lives. The founders of the organization personally believe that there is only one, true God. God’s plan for them is to share the love of Jesus Christ everywhere they go through their acts of kindness and love (“What Drives Us”). By helping these children they are fulfilling the plans the Lord has set out for them. The other reason that Helping Honduras Kids has spent their time and money making the abandoned children of Honduras’ lives better is because of the commandments written in the Bible. Matthew 22:37-39 states, “You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself” (New Kings James Version).
