Many people think that they are going through a lot of adversity; they are not. Adversity is a time when something is going through an unfavorable situation, misfortune, calamity, or distress. When someone thinks that they are having a tough time they might not understand how much more adversity someone else is going through. One occasion that can cause a whole lot of adversity is the exploration of science. Science has many unknowns and to find out more about science many people must put themselves through adversity. Douglas Mawson, Henrietta Lacks, and Phineas Gage all decided to do this, Lacks had cervical cancer and cells taken out of her body without permission, Mawson went to Antarctica and faced many challenges, and Gage had an iron …show more content…
The main contribution to science that Mawson made was the journey in Antarctica he went on. In the article on page 1 it says, “Mawson was determined to discover everything he could about a 2,000-mile-long swath of Antarctica that was terra incognita, and to wring from it the best scientific results—in terms of geology, meteorology, magnetism, biology, atmospheric science, and glaciology—ever obtained on a polar journey.” This was the whole reason he went to explore. However he didn’t come back with all of the discovers because they were in the lost diary, but he did have his memories. The next contribution that he gave to science was how long you can survive with average survival skills, and with some equipment. He had to survive with a makeshift tent and very few supplies, which isn’t easy, so he showed you can survive with enough motivation for more than a month. Another contribution to science that he provided was what will happen when you get super cold to the point that you have extreme frostbite. In the article it says that he himself doesn't get as bad frostbite as his partner who died, but he was able to report it back. He was able to report back that you can get frostbite so bad that you will be able to flick off the tip of your finger if you wish. In the end Mawson was not able to contribute as much as he wanted but he gave some …show more content…
The truth about science is that in order to learn about it, and to keep progressing people must put their lives in danger. People put their own lives in danger for the possibility of greatness, and to make a big discovery that people will remember them for, Douglas Mawson was one of these great people who wanted to be remember after his life for the discovery of things in Antarctica. He also just so happened to be one of the people that in order to receive greatness they had to go through adversity more than what he was expecting. This can also help them to be remembered, but not always in the way that they want. Mawson was able to get through surviving with a friend with basically nothing, having to eat their sled dogs because it was his only food, and living to get to safety even when his friend died. He had all of these awful things happen to him but he was still able to report discoveries about, Antarctica, surviving, and frostbite. Even if you don’t think Douglas Mawson went through the hardest obstacles to contribute the most to science, just know he was running in a race and fell a couple times, you must decide how bad the falls
