In reading Henry David Thoreau, I was halted by the views he shared. Thoreau was a suspicious man that felt there is not a reason to be taxed if person did not agree with usage of funds or need government protection.Thoreau lived in the woods, mostly self sustainable. He came into town to have a shoe mended and found himself confronted by a city official to pay a poll tax. He refused and the sheriff put him in Jail. When they asked why he wouldn’t pay he shared he should not be required to pay it. In facing his opponents, we realize that people fail to stand up for what they believe in. Truly we are sheep moving to a slaughter if we don’t speak up. Thousands have opposed slavery, the Mexican War and more recent Afghanistan and yet they do nothing. Why let a group of men determine the outcome for so many. Something that is in motion tends to stay in motion. Stand up for what you believe in and make a change. I don't believe in government. It is merely an expedient, a way for men to tell the other what is wrong. I refuse to pay any tax that I haven't researched and agreed with.
