Henry Embodies The Characteristics Of A Code Hero Hemingway

To start off, imagine if you were in war and have a bomb explosion happen right in front of your eyes. Hemingway defined Code Hero as “a man who lives correctly, following the ideals of honor, courage and endurance in a world that is sometimes chaotic, often stressful, and always painful”. Code hero measures himself by how he handles difficult situations that life throws at him. Henry embodies the characteristics of the Hemingway code hero because he believes in action, not talk, has courage and “Grace under pressure”, and controls emotions.
In addition, Fredrick Henry believes in action, not talk. “My hand went in and my knee was down on my shin” (Hemingway 55). When the bomb explosion happened it showed Henry had a good choice of actions. Henry did not let the explosion bother him. He wanted to act tough and show he could handle anything. Even though he was in some pain, Henry let it go and moved on. The other reason is when Henry and the doctor had a conversation about his surgery after the explosion. “They are going to arrest you in the morning” (Hemingway 264). Emilio overheard officers in a cafe and had to tell Henry the bad news. After Henry heard the news, by showing “grace under pressure” Henry did not have fear of the officer's finding him. He asked Emilio a bunch of questions to figure out what to do. Henry stayed calm through it. Also, Henry wanted to leave with Catherine. “Then please hurry, darling, and get dressed so we can start” (Hemingway 266). Henry was up all night trying to think of a way to escape to Switzerland with Catherine. Later in the night, Henry and Catherine decided to steal a boat and go across the lake to get there. When they got to Switzerland the officers had stopped them, but Henry had courage by lying to them and saying him and Catherine were cousins who were
