Henry James was a man who intellectually achieved renown in exploring the cultures of the New and Old Worlds. After discovering the differences between these two worlds, James had written his stories through the art of realism. The truth could only be written through the accurate description of life. Henry James knew that there was no time for sappy, poetic literature when the reader needed to know the precise events that happened in life. His philosophical ideas on realism had influenced writers after the Great War and many others who focused on everyday lives and affairs. He could not join the army during the war, because he had a spinal injury. Most of his writings were based off of true events during the Civil War, but some were travel stories based off of his own experiences in Europe. James published his first story in 1864 called, A Tragedy of Error, in the Continental Monthly. In 1869, he published critical reviews from the works of George Eliot in the Atlantic Monthly. Over time, Henry James started writing travel stories in the Nation, such as, A Little Tour in France and Italian Hours, while he was living in London. From 1875 to 1879, Henry James had published four novels. They were titled Roderick Hudson, The American, The Europeans, and Daisy Miller. Each novel, except The Europeans, was about Americans living in a European country. This is called transatlantic literature. It is a form of storytelling that merges the cultures of the New and Old Worlds. The characters often represent the culture of that country they are from and how they experience psychological drama when entering another country. However, James had added psychological drama to his characters in his later works of literature. Henry James had also used a specific type of quality in his writing, known as realism. Realism is a method used in literature that accurately describes the lifestyles of others, instead writing poetically. Henry James had often used realism in his writing because he worked for magazine industries, such as, the Atlantic Monthly and the
