On August 10, 1874 in West Branch, Iowa, a man named Herbert Hoover was born. At a young age, Herbert’s parents passed away three years apart from each other. Herbert’s father, Jesse Hoover, died of pneumonia and heart failure when Herbert was six years old. When he was nine, his mother Hulda, died of typhoid fever. After both Jesse and Hulda Hoover died, Herbert went to live with his aunt and uncle in Oregon until he went to Stanford University in California. (Herbert Hoover History)
Herbert Hoover started Stanford when it first opened in 1891. He became a mining engineer after he studied geology at Stanford University.Hoover’s hard work and traveling around the world had made him become a multimillionaire. Herbert was announced head of the food administration by President Woodrow Wilson in 1917 when the U.S was entered into the war. Herbert organized the commission for relief in Belgium. With the help of that four million people, Belgium and Northern France were provided with food supplies. Later on, Herbert Hoover was appointed secretary of commerce by president Harding. Herbert ran as the Republican Party’s nominee in 1928. Herbert won over Alfred Smith when he said he promised to bring “prosperity and peace to the Nation”. The Great Depression took place a few months into Hoover’s presidency. As the Great Depression was still going on, people lost their savings, jobs, and homes.
