Herman Melville was an American novelist, short story writer, and poet of the American Renaissance period. His best known works include Typee (1846), a romantic account of his experience in the Polynesian life, and his whaling novel Moby Dick (1851). Herman Melville was born in New York City as the third child of a merchant in French dry goods. After his father died in 1832, Melville’s formal education ended abruptly, leaving the family in a financial situation. In 1839 he took to sea as a common sailor on a merchant ship. After further adventures, he returned to Boston in 1844. Melville wrote his first book, Typee, in 1846 which became a best-seller. These successes encouraged him to marry Elizabeth Shaw as he continued to write novels. In
