It is the first day of school, all the children arrive back from summer vacation. To most students, all faces seem familiar, except for the new kid, Jack. He is shy and quiet, avoiding contact with other kids. He sits alone during lunch. A group of kids walk up to him, they call him names, push him around treat him like he has no place in society. Jack whimpers from the pain they cause him, and his bullies feed off of his fear. He is on the ground, depending on help. That’s when he sees an unfamiliar face, and hears a new voice. A boy in his class, dashes over, to see that Jack was being bullied. The boy stands up to the bullies and attends to Jack for help, he is a hero. In To Kill A Mockingbird, by Harper Lee, a hero is someone who shows courage and determination. Additionally, heros are those who are willing to take risks in order to help others. This is especially true in This Is Where It Ends, by Marieke Nijkamp. The heroes in T.K.A.M. are Atticus, Jem, Dolphus Raymond, and Mrs. Maudie; in This Is Where it Ends, they are Claire, Fareed, Mr. M., and Jordan. Subsequently, a hero is someone who shows courage and determination through difficult situations. Atticus displayed courage in court when he was the only one defending/ controverting for Tom Robinson. Atticus knew he would receive animosity for taking the case, but followed through with it anyway because it was the proper thing to do.
