Everyday, people do something courageous and are then considered a ‘hero’ to a single person, a small group or even, sometimes, the public as a whole. As these people prepare to bask in their ‘fifteen minutes of fame’, it’s important to consider what these people have in common. Heroic actions come from people of all different sizes, shapes and colors; so, a heroic feat must come from someone’s character and attitude. Katniss Everdeen of the Hunger Games, played by actress Jennifer Lawrence, fully illustrates a heroic identity throughout all of her character’s evolvement through the four movies of the series. After the selection, the tributes are forced rushed final goodbyes with their family members by Capitol Peacekeepers. Katniss spends her goodbyes with a farewell to her best friend, Gale, and insisting to Prim that she be strong for their mother, who is already incredibly depressed over her husband’s death from a coal mine explosion. Next, Katniss and Peeta board a train where they meet their mentor and stylist and head off to the Capitol. Peeta reveals his long-felt feelings for Katniss and Haymitch, their mentor, proposes a plan where they act like a loving couple to gain sympathy from the Capitol viewing public. They spend the next week or so training for the Games, forming alliances and strategies, learning new skills and performing for judges from the Capitol. After they finish preparations, Peeta and Katniss spend a restless night and Peeta tells Katniss that he will do everything he can to get her home to her family, who need her much more than his family needs him. The next morning, Katniss loads up into the tube that will take her to the arena. Katniss narrowly avoids the first bloodbath where all the supplies are located, and heads out into the forest.
