Heroic Monomyth In Walt Disney's Film The Hero

In 1998, Walt Disney Films created an American animated musical action comedy drama film. This film was based on the Chinese legend of Fa Mulan. Mulan is the story of a young Chinese girl named Mulan. She decides to go to war for her elder father. The movie uncovers her adventures and trials. The movie is a great example of the use of the heroic monomyth. The concept was introduced by Joseph Campbell in The Hero with a Thousand Faces in 1949. He divided 17 stages into 3 different acts. The acts are known as the Departure or the Separation, the Initiation section, and finally the Return section. The first act of Campbell's seventeen stages is the Departure also known as the Separation. The Separation act consit of the call to Adventure, Refusal …show more content…

During the intiation sections Mulan deals with some of the stages trials, the meeting with the Goddess/love, Woman as Temptress, Atonement with the Father, Apotneosis,and finally the ultimate Boon. The introduction of Li Shang was the best transtion into the intiation section. He was the commander and was able to get Mulan and the other soilders into shape. During the training it shows Mulan struggling and almost giving up. She finally gains strenght and becomes a well deserving soilder. The soilders are then sent out to meet General Li in the mountains, but arer soon ambushed by the Huns. Mulan creates the avalanche that buries some of the Huns. During the fight, Mulan is injured, and she is revaled as a woman. As Mulan was being trained she began to have a fascination with her commander Li Shang. He also starts to have a strange interst in Mulan which he did not understand at the time. When Mulan true identity was revelved Shang was angry but spared her life since she saved his. Mulan was then exciled. As Mulan is leaving, she sees that some of the Huns survived the Avalanche, and sees them heading to the city to capture the Emperor. She goes ot the Imperial City and tries to warn Li Shang, but he doesn't want to listen.As Mulan warned the Huns appeared locked up the palace.
