Beowulf’s Heroic Qualities

In the Anglo-Saxon epic Beowulf, Beowulf is not only a warrior, but he is also an epic hero. An epic hero is someone who is admired for his/her hard work. Beowulf is considered a hero because he displays strength and courage the battles against Grendel, Grendel’s mom, and the dragon. The defeat of the monsters and the dragon allowed Beowulf to transition into a king. First, he battled with Grendel Beowulf showed the heroic quality of being strong. He fought Grendel without any weapons and he did not use protection. Beowulf has the strength of 30 men in each arm, is hired by Hrothgar to protect his domain (Garcia). Courage allowed Beowulf to face Grendel’s mom. Not only did he have courage, but Beowulf gained fame from facing the monster. Everyone looked at him now as hero for having courage and the strength to defeat the monster. “Beowulf shows that his courage and strength should be an inspiration to all heroes”(Garcia). Beowulf desire was to defeat Grendel’s mom after he has already defeated Grendel. He had his mindset to destroy the monster and end all chaos for once. By Beowulf having courage and strength defeating the monster was not a problem for him, if he could do it once he could do it again. Beowulf would have rather fought and died for his people then to go out like a coward and not have did anything to protect his people. Beowulf stood strong, never backing down from either battles he proved to his people that they were worth him dying for. Beowulf showed he was an hero by defending his people.
Beowulf stated, “For this, these jewels, i thank Our Father in Heaven, Ruler of the Earth For all of this, that His grace has given me, Allowed me to bring to my people while breath Still came to my lips. I sold my life For this treasure, and i sold it well” ( Raffel, lines 816-821). Beowulf believed that dying for his people was for a great cause, he wanted everyone to remember him as the greatest.
