Have you ever sat down and mused on the definition of a hero? If so, what did you conclude? The subject of heroism is a well known and discussed topic, sparking controversy everywhere. What is the meaning of it? What is the difference between a hero and one who is not as so? Heroism is a commonly admired trait and derives from compassion and moral goodness, which does not include one purposely hurting another, although many may think otherwise. Heroes give us goals to work for and kind ideals to aspire to be. For instance, Eugene Segers is a former army soldier from the 101st Airborne Pathfinder Division. A bomb exploded under the floorboard of his travelling vehicle in southern Afghanistan, from which he lost his right leg. Despite enduring such a difficult situation, Segers has kept a positive outlook and continues to march forward through life. “I didn’t do anything special, but if the progress I have made motivates another wounded veteran to keep going, then that’s great,” (SB 59). A (synonym for example) for this is Welles Crowther, a man who died in the attack of 9/11. He worked in the South tower of the World Trade Center, and was inside when it collapsed. In between the initial attack and the collapse, he saved twelve lives, and kept going back up to save more after each group of people. According family members and friends, Crowther was a very warm man, always the first to tell someone they did good on something. Another example from 9/11 is the large group of (sailors?) who drove their boats to the island and took people to safety on the mainland. (Find part where guy says that there had never been so many boats all going to the same place with the same purpose at once) Both these amazing people are great examples of what a kind hearted hero
