Heroism In Freak The Mighty

We can all agree that coconut is hairy and gross on the outside, but on the inside it is velvety and sweet--People are the same. You can be rough on the outside, yet sweet and beautiful within. Take the characters, Kevin and Max, from the novel Freak the Mighty for example. This novel distributes two characters, One, Max, is large and overgrown, but has learning disabilities. The other, Kevin, has Morquio syndrome which causes him not to grow on the outside, yet Kevin is insanely intelligent. Furthermore, They instantly click and go on quests together to rescue fair maidens and return stolen treasure, and you will see them transform into an unstoppable being. Freak the Mighty. It means anyone can save the day. You could be three feet or an elderly or someone who never went to school and still save the day. Take Freak for example he is small, but, as shown many times in the book, he can be just as heroic as the next. An excerpt from the novel that helps my case is, “He squeezes and squeezes and squeezes. -I'm in this faraway place, falling backwards real slow and dreamy, when I hear a window breaking. Then a small faraway voice is saying, ‘Put your hands up, villain!’ and- I really am falling and the air is coming back into my lungs so fast it hurts. I'm lying there all crumpled up sideways. I can see Freak. He's rolled down through the cellar window into the pile of coal, and he's trying to stand up.” Freak then goes on to save Max from Killer Kane. Max is about to die when Freak jumps in and saves him. Max is strong and large but can’t save himself, but a small handicap can. This shows that Freak is anything but helpless and is definitely a hero. This helps support the quote because we just watched a six foot person get over thrown and then somebody half his size comes down and saves the day. Moreover, another heroic character is Loretta Lee. Loretta is clearly under educated, she is also made out to be weak. Everyone's important. You are you and no one can change that. Even if you’re small, undereducated, or older you can defy the odds. That is what my themes are trying to say. Furthermore, Freak defied the odds till his last breath, Max did too. Anyone can. I carry this with me as I go. The lessons Freak the Mighty taught us are unforgettable.
