Tris, the main character of the book Divergent faces many trials as she comes of age and needs to take an aptitude test to help her determine the faction she belongs to in order to guide her choice on Ceremony day. Her test results are inconclusive making her a Divergent, meaning she fits into multiple factions and considered a threat to the faction system. During the Choosing Ceremony, Tris must decide out of the five factions which to join, Abnegation, Erudite, Dauntless, Candor or Amity. Although it means leaving her family, Tris chooses the Dauntless faction and goes through an extremely challenging initiation comprised of three stages to prove her worthiness to join the Dauntless. For example, Tris had difficulty deciding whether she should choose her parents faction, Abnegation, or the more dangerous Dauntless faction. “My problem might be that even if I did go home, I wouldn’t belong there, among people who give without thinking and care without trying” (Roth 75) . This quote shows how Tris didn’t think she belonged to the Abnegation faction. She didn't think she fit in with the Abnegation because she felt she wasn't selfless enough to belong to that faction. Tris also said, “I am not Abnegation. I am not Dauntless. I am Divergent” (Roth 442). This quote shows how after Tris struggled to figure out whether she was an Abnegation or a Dauntless, she finally realizes her true self and professes she is Divergent. This shows that Tris has gained confidence and is proud of being a Divergent. These quotes show how Tris struggled with her identity throughout the book and finally overcame those struggles to become confident in her identity. This was one of the struggles that Tris faced in the book
