The novel The Scarlet Letter, can easily be perceived as a feminist piece of material. Hawthorne created the character Hester Prynne, who is an acceptably strong female character. She endures challenges such as raising her daughter by herself, being publicly ostracized for having an affair while unmarried, and accepting her sin along with being honest. He also presents the daughter of Hester, Pearl, as a strong and intelligent female character, despite her age. Hawthorne really focuses on displaying the women in the story as the triumphant ones. As Hester raises her daughter she faces challenges throughout the years. Some of the Puritans suppose that Pearl is a “demon offspring” because of how she was made. Pearls a constant reminder that keeps Hester aware of her sin, even with that reminder Hester loves Pearl unconditionally. It takes strength and vitality for a person to love and accept something that causes so many issues and pain. Hester perseveres through the years raising Pearl against all odds. You first meet Hester on the scaffold with pearl in her arms, beginning her punishment. Despite her lonely life style, Hester somehow finds aplomb to defy both the townspeople and the local government. Her defiance becomes radiating and continues throughout the entire story. Hester may be shunned for her sins but that doesn’t stop her from standing up for her daughter’s guardianship. The governor is determined to take pearl away from Hester and she says “god gave me the child! He gave her in requital of all things else, which he had taken from me…Ye shall not take her! I will die first!” When the governor continued to insist that pearl would be in good care, Hester is defiant and continues to plead against him, “God gave her into my keeping. I will not give her up!” Even with everyone against her and ignoring her she stands up for what she believes
