A figure of perfect elegance emerges from a prison, proudly wearing an elaborately embroidered scarlet letter A on her bosom. Puritans have first thought to have known the wearer of the scarlet letter, Hester Prynne, as a malevolent and cruel being. This defiant woman has indeed committed an act of sin. Her sin in fact was adultery, which is what the “A” on her bosom represents. The Puritan society is completely aware that that not everyone would follow the rules and that action will be taken. The consequences of sin are now enforced by the Puritan society. With this said, Hester Prynne has demonstrated strength, responsible, and compassion despite her current situation. Realizing her fate, she now understands that the society will never forgive her for what she’s done. Feeling humiliated and ashamed, Hester still bares to withstand all the comments being said among the crowd. Hester also demonstrates her strength when she confronts Roger Chillingworth in the prison cell as he tries to make her tell him who her lover is. As Hester knows that Chillingworth only seeks revenge, she strongly refuses to tell him, despite the danger that might come. Despite all the rough times Hester has gone through, she is finally flourishing into a responsible woman. With the treatment and suffering she received back at the scaffold, Hester now understands her sin and accepts it. Lying will never result in good, but only an evil that will seek its way back around to you when you least expect it. Hester has become more attentive in her society, she doesn’t resist helping her society when she can just because of what they done to her. She acknowledges that it was her fault she got a punishment, and respects the Puritan’s way of life.
