A touching story of how religion and moral extremes could take us so far. The story of The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne, re-accounts the life of a young married woman named Hester, who travels to America to start a new life while her husband stays back in England. She is found to be with a child by another man. Because she has not revealed the name of her lover she is forced to wear a scarlet “A” for adulteress. Unknown by her or her lover, her husband is in the crowd moving on with his plan of revenge in this dramatic story line of a young woman's life. Unlike other writers who may try to portray a time where religion competes with human passion and expressions, Hawthorne’s experiences form a background for the timeline. His story criticizes the way that the puritan society in ways that are so small most people wouldn’t normally pick up on them because of the fast moving plot. Hawthorne’s writing gets you involved into the book and takes you back to the 17th century New England. Her exclusion from the town was more of a blessing to her than a punishment to her. By marking her as an adulteress, she no longer needs to follow the strict expectations set by the puritan community. She is forced to wear a scarlet letter “A” on her dress at all times. On the other hand her lover, Arthur Dimmesdale, was forced to deny his desire for Hester because he would not have taken the same fate that Hester had. Author is a puritan minister who has many people that adore him in his congregation. He does not feel that he could come forward or come out the same way Hester. Author believes that since god created the soul and put it in the human body, you are god’s chosen people that would not or could not commit evil acts or sin.
