The author, Cressida Cowell, was able to bring the fictional character Hiccup from the fantasy movie How to Train Your Dragon to life, allowing the audience to connect to Hiccup emotionally using many different and unique characterization techniques. For instance, in the film Hiccup is the protagonist of the movie, later being what we would call a hero. However, he starts as nothing more than an overlooked and weak child trying to fill the shoes of his chief father. From the beginning the plot revolves around what he sees and experiences, letting the audience view the world of dragons through his eyes. This view shift starts with him acting violently towards dragons just like everyone else, hurting one so badly that it could no longer fly. Hiccup felt remorse and sorrow for hindering the quality of life of this dragon but, instead of killing it like all the others would have done, he began to take care of it, eventually developing feelings towards a creature he has been taught to fear and fight all his life. This process of trust and character building he and the dragon, he names Toothless, must go through also makes him a round character because he must hide his allegiance towards the dragons at first, but then slowly gets his friends to see the dragons from a different light, helping them to understand why he has changed the way he views the dragons, taking on a “live and let live” mindset, rather than going out of his way to hurt them like the rest of the community does. This, however, is not an easy task and getting his father and the other adults of the village to see his point of view is a difficult challenge he feels he must take
