“Hidden Intellectualism,” by Gerald Graff, is an essay about a former English professor argues that intellectualism isn’t always achieved through education like school and college. He gives reasons to his argument that there is a possibility of some hidden intellectualism besides the academic intellectualism. I agree with Gerald Graff’s point of view because there are many people who do not do well academically but do great in extra-curricular activities such as sports. This essay will show how Gaff’s ideas on Hidden Intellectualism can be applied to modern day education system. The problem is that the view of what is good for some individuals might have a negative impact on others. You can’t just ask a student to write about their interests, because it may not necessarily help them gain intellectual skills. I believe that intellectualism is a trait that your born with, which Graff has. I truly think that students should be given a chance to follow their personal interests. It’s not right to make someone to do something against their will. We are allowed to make our own choices or decisions because we have freedom.
