Carolyn Nguyen Mrs. Bright Honors English 10 04 May 2015 Hidden Meanings in the World of Dreams Human beings live in two different worlds. Each night, they are transported into a new visionary, imaginative world where they can get eaten my monsters, or be drowned to death in a raging ocean and fly across the sparkling galaxies. The difference between these two worlds is that one can be recollected easily, and the other world mysteriously cannot. The other world cannot be held on to, it eventually turns into a faded memory that slowly vanishes into nonexistence and become forever forgotten. There are millions of ways dreams can be interpreted. Many believes that dreams are created from the complexity of the brain organizing memories or synthesizing patches of random electrical impulses into a unified story; others believe that dreams are helping hands that guide humans through the rough road of life or they believe that dreams help convey messages from the unconscious. The brain induce dreams as a way to protect the person that’s dreaming from all the noise and work going on in the lower part of the brain by inducing random images that are created from the activation of specific brain parts (Miller). Dreams are also theorized that it is a way to help people overcome life-threatening situations by stimulating emotions of fear and anxiety (Fisher). The activation-synthesis theory states that dreams are a part of human life because of the creativity of the brain that synthesizes random electrical impulses into an imaginative cohesive story; however, the theory states that dreams have no meaning (Madresh). The founding father of dream theories, Sigmund Freud, proposed that dream are a way to unlock one’s deepest secrets and that one who dreams walks to the road to the secretive world of unconscious feelings (LcLeod). Dreams are different for everyone and still remains a mystery. This “other world” that humans create themselves where can get swallowed by mythological creatures, touch the dazzling stars, and become the great king of the world is not only a part of human life, but of human individuality and uniqueness. Possibly, this other mysterious world that humans create unconsciously into a work of art will never have one true answer.
