During my years at Portland High School, I discovered my passion for assisting others to learn and grow. As a high school student, I tutor other students in several subjects including math, science and English. By helping these students improve themselves in their academics, I feel pride for what I do to help and always seem to have a smile on my face when teaching others. Yet, I always found myself enjoying my English classes and actively participating in comprehensive discussions about literature. Hence, I decided to major in English secondary education. This way I am able to teach my passion to others and continue to engage myself in this subject.

I am a tutor to a variety of ages from middle schoolers to high schoolers. I am regularly assigned students who would need help in a certain subject. I meet with these students during a study hall in the library. I work one on one with the students helping them understand a subject they are confuse on. Usually I would use explain to the students in a way they would understand. By doing this, the student is able the grasp the material more easily. If the student is still confuse, I would meet up with them several time, assisting them in their homework and giving practice problems. With this tutor system that I take part in, there is in increase in the performance of the tutees. When I see an improvement in performance with the students I tutor, I cannot help but smile.
