Why High School Basketball Players Should Be Eligible For The NBA Draft Some of the greatest players of all time were drafted out of high school. Tracy McGrady, LeBron James, Moses Malone, and Kobe Bryant were just some of players drafted out of high school. Currently, high school basketball players are not eligible for the NBA (National Basketball Association) draft. High school basketball players should be eligible for the NBA (National Basketball Association) draft because it could benefit them by making more money, having less distractions, and making them succeed earlier in the NBA (National Basketball Association). The quicker you get to the league and put in more hours than you could in college, the faster you earn more minutes, get paid more, and become a superstar. According to Guerrero, “By allowing players to get the opportunity to play in the greatest professional basketball league in the world while they’re young, they not only help the athlete, the NBA (National Basketball Association) also benefits from it,” (Guerrero). LeBron James was drafted after high school. After his rookie year, people began to think he could be a very good player. Years of practice and hard work later, he is known as the best basketball player in the world. Others may argue that heading to the NBA (National Basketball Association) earlier will not lead to earlier success in the league. I can see where they are going with this argument however, I think that by starting to play at the higher level earlier, you will get used to the style of play quicker and become better by practicing and playing with better competition. Duke Head Coach, Mike Krzyzewski stated, “I mean, a kid who’s really really good coming out of high school, who does not want to go to school, would gain more from being in a professional system when he is working on his craft and his body and the development everyday, just like a baseball player, and I would like to see that,”
