My name is Jeneva Smith and I am an incoming freshman at Nelson County. I have been in Band for the past three years and Drama for the past year, I have learned what it means to work with others and how to be accountable. I have written this letter to explain how the core values of being a Flight Leader will further help shape my future. One of the values of Taking Flight is to focus on the individual. To me, Focusing on the Individual involves directing one's mental and physical energy towards the achievement of a specific outcome, and avoiding distractions or irrelevant disruptions. The second core value that will contribute to my success is Lead with a Purpose. To lead with a purpose is to make decisions that are in line with your values and beliefs. It also means creating a culture of excellence where your team feels supported and motivated to achieve their best. A purpose-driven leader empowers their team. The text, titled Extracurricular Participation and Student Engagement, states that “Almost every high school in the U.S. offers some type of extracurricular activity, such as music, academic clubs, and sports. These activities offer opportunities for students to learn the values of teamwork, individual and group responsibility.” This is showing that if I participate in extracurriculars then I will learn the values of teamwork. Teamwork is a major part of being a leader, currently at OKH we have the LEAD values, the A in LEAD stands for Affirming yourself in others. I have learned how to be a LEAD Learner.
