By organizing the curriculum fordevelopmental education in this fashion, it ensure students complete the courses prepared to takeon the rest of the college curriculum.Not all institutions have developmental education classes, or they may just have a couple.This does not mean they do not have under-prepared students, it means they have differentmethods of supporting them. Unfortunately, funding and incentives for developmental educationare fading, causing four-year institutions to drop the programs (Pretlow III & Wathington, Costof developmental education: An update of Breneman and Haarlow, 2011). Community collegesare a great resource for developmental education, but some four-year institutions have betterresources and support that these students are being denied access to (Pretlow III & Wathington,Cost of developmental education: An update of Breneman and Haarlow, 2011).These studentsstill need access to faculty and curriculum that will support and challenge them in order for themto develop the skills they need to be successful either in their careers or when they transfer to afour-year institution.Section III: Addressing the IssueUnder-prepared students are not a new issue in higher education. There are records ofstudents from the 1700s that were tutored in Latin and Greek at Harvard (Stephens, 2001).During the 1700s and 1800s, geometry went from being a senior-level class at Yale, to anentrance requirement (Stephens, 2001).Because of the increased expectations of what studentsshould know, more and more were coming under-prepared.This caused some schools to set upsupport services, the most notable at the University of Wisconsin (Stephens, 2001).
