The term “K-pop” applies to all genres of popular music within South Korea and includes: dance-pop, pop ballad, electronic, rock, metal, hip-hop, and R&B. Out of all of these genres, hip-hop has the highest chance of having a strong influence in America. Not only do hip-hop groups have phenomenal choreography, but their style of music is appealing to Americans.
Korean hip-hop groups always perform in unison and have very complex movements which captivate the audience’s attention. Because of the complexity of their dances, many have attempted to learn the dance, including our very own Asian American Club. While they often play concerts in Los Angeles and New York, there has been an increasing interest in K-pop in Chicago. Seeing as there is only one K-pop store in Chicago, more stores can open if more artists perform here. Not only will the Chicago fans be satisfied, but the artists would make more money by selling their merchandise. The city might also make more money as the artist’s fans would come from all over the world just to see them. It’s a win-win situation.
K-pop will be recognized as an invasion, just like the British invasion in the 60’s. This is due to their great influence as artists who are well-rounded, which is becoming increasingly hard to find these days. This expected invasion will allow for a greater appreciation for Asian music. The Asian market will only continue to grow from here on now.
Korean hip-hop represents the artist in me. By that I don’t mean that I’m artistically gifted, but rather I seem to have a good eye and ear for star potential. I can’t dance, produce, or write my own songs well, but I can spot talent when I see it.
