Society Supports Sameness Kanye West is one of today’s best music artists. He released many songs and one of those songs is “New Slaves”. In this song Kanye talks about racism and how African Americans are treated in the luxury markets. The lyrics keep identifying who the New Slaves are and how they are still being manipulated by the dominant race and influenced to be materialistic. The media plays a big role in influencing the people to be materialistic and be less individual. Kanye keeps his individuality and stays different from the rest even though it hurts his name in the industry but it is the price he is willing to pay to stay that way. There are many references throughout the song that refers to racism. Kanye starts the song off by saying “My momma was raised in an era when clean water was only served to the fairer skin”, his mother grew up during the time of racial segregation in the United States where the Jim Crow Laws were still being used. Those laws were defined as separate but equal, in reality that was not it, it was second class citizens which were African Americans and people affiliated them as people who could not read, write, or have a good job, basically not being white.
