They have contributed a lot to us and fought no less then we the people fought for this country. On Memorial Day, we honor all the courageous men and women who have served in the army and paid the price of death for their loyalty and dedication. From the point of the American Revolution to the war in Iraq now Hispanic Americans have risked their lives to defend the United States and its believes of freedom and democracy. In the Civil War probably the best-known Hispanic was the American naval officer named David G. Farragut because he successfully commanded Union forces at the capture of New Orleans. President Lincoln then gave him the Medal of Honor. Many consider the battle of New Orleans the greatest battle of the Civil War and thanks to this brave Hispanic we won it. While much discrimination remained, World War I was the start of a struggle for equal rights for them. As far as World War II the number of Hispanics are not known. Estimates range from 250 thousand to 500 thousand and about 55,000 Puerto Ricans. They were among the first U.s Soldiers to join the war and they replaced the people that went into the military because of the Great Depression through the Bracero Program helping boost back the economy. While not many participated in the war fights over 270,000 men and women worked in different industries that supported the war. It was ironic because how much they helped but how they were treated as the lowest person almost like garbage. After the World Wars there help did not stop there and as discrimination started to decrease and new rights were added they tried harder than ever to support their country. During the Korean War in 1950-1953 44,000 Puerto Ricans served extensively in nine major campaigns, losing about 560 men in battlefield action.In 1990-1991 over twenty thousand Hispanic men and women participated in Operation Desert Shield and Desert
