To me, culture consists of the beliefs, customs, and lifestyles that a group of people or a society shares. Culture is important because it defines who we are, it identifies us with a group of people, and it creates a bond between otherwise unrelated people. Culture creates geographical diversity and uniqueness and it plays a large role in personal development My nationality is really going to affect my experience abroad. Here in America, my ethnicity is commonplace; however, in both Peru and Costa Rica, my light skin tone is going to make me stand out wherever I go.
History has proven that many ancient civilizations have existed before the Europeans and Native Americans, including the ancient Nubian and Incan civilizations. Although they are not explored as deeply as European history is, these ancient societies were, and still are, influential in world history. Two of these kingdoms – Nubia and the Inka Empire – are similar in their role to the development of their kingdom, yet they functioned in different ways to affect the individual continents in which they were located. The Nubian and Incan empires had many similarities as they were both important; one of the many including how they left their history behind – through sculpture and storytelling. Another important similarity was that both kingdoms worshiped gods and practiced ancestor worship.
Being Hispanic makes me feel proud. It is something that makes me what I am, remembering my Mexican roots reminds me as my ancestors fought to get what they intended. Being Hispanic is not easy for all the prejudices that has this society. We havebeing judget as thieves, rapists, and much more. As in all societies there are people who make mistakes during his life and choose wrong paths but that is no reason to generalize to all those who belong to that social group.
The two articles that I read for this assignment are called “Hispanic Heritage”. I have decided to read about this mainly because I did not understand why Latinos celebrate “Hispanic Heritage” in the USA. This celebration is completely unknown in Latin countries. Most people have never heard until they are in the USA. During the Hispanic Heritage Month people commemorate with this event in order to recognize the contributions that Hispanics make to the USA.
Culture is an essential part of a community’s identity, because it links individuals to a collective bond. The Americas have always contained a vast variety of cultural communities, especially in the United States. The US is known for being one of the most diverse nations in the world, housing hundreds of different cultures. Mexican-Americans display a strong sense of a cultural background, which falls as a subset of the bigger Latino culture that links all Latinos. Oral history is a major aspect on the Mexican culture, which contributes to the truth of how history in the United States actually happened.
As a Latina, I have suffered through the awkward moments of having to correct documents or individuals when I see the surname "Hernandez" next to my first name. Oftentimes, even when reading out my last name from the attendance sheet, where it’s clearly spelled out, I still get the occasional Crystal Hernandez. It’s not Hernandez; it’s Henriquez. It’s always been that way. I understand the similarities, but it isn't a coincidence that you think my last name is Hernandez because being Latino means being categorized in a way that makes you unrecognizable from the next person.
We’re constantly being influences by our surrounding. Usually, our parent’s cultural background plays a significant part in shaping who we are. On the other hand, co-cultures also promote their own set of values which could easily shape our ideas about certain matters as well. These components are a part of how we perceive ourselves and how others perceive too. Growing in a Mexican household allowed me to be exposed to more family orientated events that included music, food and dancing.
One of my biggest supporters are my parents. Their support and conviction about the worth of acquiring an education has shaped my beliefs, values and ambition to continue higher education and use my career in a progressive way to give back to my community. Unfortunately, not everyone had the same support system like I did. Many of my peers struggled whether to continue their education or financially support their family. This is a very dangerous reality within the Latino community that needs to be addressed and resolved immediately.
During my two interviews my with my two people of the Hispanic culture I came to find they were both had a good level of health literacy from a quick glance. It’s interesting I came to this conclusion fast after asking them each their questions, because I barely know these two on a personal level. Raul I met last year at comicpalooza, where we bonded over love over television and movies and came in contact since, mostly having conversations about show/movies; but never had conversations on anything like this level. Francis I met over swim class this fall at UH recreation center, so I came to the conclusion to pick two people I didn’t really know to ask these questions for this paper.
I believe the term, hispanic, itself does not define who I am. I define who I am and who I want to become. However, I do come from a Mexican heritage. Coming from a Mexican heritage has influenced and deeply impacted my life. My heritage has taught me a lot.
Culture impacted my personality and how I act and feel. To me, culture is a very important part of every person’s life. Culture can influence my different types of values. My mom practices Mormon and my dad is Catholic and because of this circumstance, I grew up with both beliefs. In my family on Christmas, we celebrate the Birth of Christ.
To me, being hispanic is probably the biggest blessing I could ever get. I love being hispanic. Being able to know that my culture is completely different than those at school. It has brought so much knowledge that telling other people about makes them want to be hispanic. Although the majority of it is happy experience, I have had my share of negative experiences.
In the 16th Century, Spain became one of the European forces to reckon with. To expand even further globally, Spanish conquistadors were sent abroad to discover lands, riches, and North America and its civilizations. When the Spanish and Native American groups met one another, they judged each other, as they were both unfamiliar with the people that stood before them. The Native American and Spanish views and opinions of one another are more similar than different because when meeting and getting to know each other, neither the Spaniards nor the Native Americans saw the other group of people as human. Both groups of people thought of one another as barbaric monsters and were confused and amazed by each other’s cultures.
I’m the first generation of my family to be Mexican -American, but I have been introduced to the Mexican culture since I was born. I appreciate the difficulties my parents have faced to make me the person that I am today even though I wasn’t born in Mexico my parents have taught me the language and the culture which I’m so proud of being part of. For others being Hispanic is actually being born in any Latin American countries which is not true at all. Being Hispanic is much more than my cultural background it actually describes how much I appreciate my culture and how I get to experience things other people don’t. I fit into the Hispanic community through the experiencing the culture first hand ,participating in traditions and planning to include my culture in my future.
Race plays a big part of my cultural identity. Im African-American and so is my mom,grandma,grandpa,aunt,uncle,etc. Usually in my race when my mom Scarla Siner was 15 which is my age right now that 's not a good age to get pregnant,but she did and here I am now. I was the only great grandchild so everyone loved me. My race is strong because ive learned blacks have been through lots of obstacles.
