Movies have been use to depict mankind’s most historical events, improving our knowledge and increasing our imaginations. The movie Cesar Chavez, has both fictional and real aspects of the timeline where Chavez stood for something he believed in. The film has some accurate scenes of what really happened, but like all movies, it has to find a way to catch viewers’ interests and attract them to watch the movie by showing appealing circumstances and not dwelling into too much detail. The movie is mostly counterfactual but it did manage to accurately depict some events. He intended and succeeded to persuade the English public to boycott grapes from California. He is then shown with civil rights supporters, at a bridge dumping grapes into the water, as a symbolical reference to the Boston Tea Party. There is no physical evidence or written report of Chavez traveling to Europe in the way described in the movie. However, there is evidence in Roger Bruns’ Cesar Chavez and the United Farm Workers Movement, that “…Marcus Munoz…” and “…the Boston protesters decided to … copy the events of the Boston Tea Party. …we[they] emulated the event by dumping grapes arriving from California into the harbor instead of tea.” (page 64). Kennedy was a big setback for the union, more than the movie emphasized. Kennedy was running for president, and he was a major supporter of the labor movement. He was assassinated after “his victory speech to tumultuous ovation” (page 67), unlike in the movie where Chavez and some supporters find out about this in a moving truck through the radio, “Chavez [, actually] waited in a private room of the hotel with a mariachi band set to play in the senator’s honor” then finding out of the senator’s fate. This not only shows the relationship between the union and Kennedy, but also the depth and impact of the personal relationship between the senator and Chavez, and how greatly it affected him. One of the biggest defining traits about Chavez that the movie fails to acknowledge, is the most important civil rights figure in the American history, who he viewed as “… a great teacher and role model.” (page 67). King was an important figure to Chavez and a huge influence on him which makes mentioning Robert Kennedy as the only key figure in the union inaccurate. Also Donald McDonnell is never mentioned, and according to Gaston Espinosa in “Chavez, Cesar 1927-1993.”, he “…encouraged Chavez to read about the nonviolent strategies for social change of saint Francis of assist and Mohandas
