History is a subject that I have always been fascinated by and wish to study at university, as it will allow me to expand my knowledge of global history, in addition to furthering my understanding of how conflicts of the past have influenced modern societies. The cause behind my passion for the subject is hard to pinpoint, as history is something I have always been enthralled by, but I believe that my particular interest in 20th century history stemmed from being told my grandparents personal accounts of World War II from a young age and since then, I have had a real desire to understand as much as possible about the past. This has benefited me whilst completing coursework and essays for history. Reading has fuelled my enthusiasm for history through reading historical books and novels such as ‘Wolf Hall’, which I read whilst learning about Henry VIII and Thomas Cromwell during my AS History course, and also ‘Engima’ by Robert Harris, following the story of Alan Turing and his attempts to crack Engima during World War II. I have visited many historical locations from a variety of eras; in particular post World War II Germany, a period that I am especially fascinated by. From a school trip in year 11, I had the opportunity to visit a Stazi Prison in East Berlin where I learnt about the various different torture methods inflicted on the prisoners by the Stazi police during the Cold War, and various other museums in the area. I have also gone to the Roman Baths and Stonehenge to gather an understanding of ancient civilisation and the heritage of Britain, something I feel that is hugely
