The first Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) were founded in the 19th century with the mission of providing higher education opportunities to Black Americans who had been excluded from predominantly white institutions. These institutions were established during a time of slavery and institutional racism, and served as a beacon of hope and a means of empowerment for the African American community. The first HBCU was Cheyney University, founded in 1837 in Pennsylvania. However, it was not until after the Civil War that HBCUs gained momentum, with the federal government providing funding to create schools for newly freed slaves.
