Tesla, Inc. (formerly Tesla Motors) is an American company specialized in electric cars, lithium-ion battery energy storage, and residential photovoltaic panels (through the subsidiary company SolarCity). The additional products Tesla sells include the Tesla Powerwall and Powerpack batteries, solar panels and solar roof tiles.
The company was founded in 2003 by Martin Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning, group of engineers who wanted to prove that people didn't need to compromise to drive electric - that electric vehicles can be better, quicker and more fun to drive than gasoline cars. Over the next three years, Tesla ramped up production to over 50,000 cars a year, introduced larger battery packs with close to 300 miles of range. Tesla also introduced its Autopilot self-driving feature, which allows the car to stay in its lane and keep a safe distance from other cars, even in stop-and-go traffic. In September 2015, Tesla started deliveries of Model X cars. The Tesla Model X is a full-sized, all-electric, luxury, crossover SUV. According to Wikipedia, global cumulative sales of Model X since inception totaled about 72,059 units through December 2017.
