The Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia was formed in 1964. The acronym for this terrorist group is FARC. The FARC is known to be run similar to the military as they use several of the military’s practices as well as strategies of terrorism. This terrorist organization contains about 10,000 armed guerillas. The FARC began as just a small group of people and with the help of the taxation on illegal drugs, the FARC as grown to be have just as much strength as the military. The first of the harsh movements in Colombia began in the 1920s and 1930s. Peasants all over Colombia gathered together to protest the cruel working environments as most people during that time worked on plantations. These were regular people that had no experience of being a guerilla, they were just angry people who were willing to do whatever they could to get their point across. In the beginning of the FARC, they were not nearly as powerful as they are today. They were only able to make attacks a few times a month and only small attacks. Their most successful technique was the creation of a military front. A front is a geographical zone where militaries fight. The creation of this front enabled the FARC to spread quickly throughout republics and recruit more people. The growth of the FARC has been aided tremendously by revenue from the FARC's taxation of illegal drug production. Support for the FARC, however, is also a product of the lack of government response to the severe hardships faced by peasant farmers in the region. During the 1970s, the FARC had about 9 fronts with massive interior divisions. By 1983 the FARC had created over 18 fronts. During the Seventh Conference for the FARC, they added the title of "the people's army.” This made their name the FARC-EP, or Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia - Army of the People.() The FARC held the ability to efficiently transform the profits resulting illegal narcotic trading into operative funds. Those economic abilities enabled the FARC to go against the Colombian government in large outbreaks. Once the FARC began to trade drugs, they were able to control a vast amount of production territory which led to drug trafficking. This allowed the FARC to intensify its military-fighting
