NASA The National Aeronautics and Space Administration, or NASA, was open for business on October 1st 1958. This was about two months after President Dwight Eisenhower’s signing of the National Aeronautics and Space Act. This act allowed for research into flight inside and outside of Earth's atmosphere which established NASA. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration was formed to precede the Soviets in the Space Race during the Cold War. NASA was based off of the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics, or (NACA). Under Woodrow Wilson, NACA was founded on March 3rd, 1915. NACA conducted aeronautical research especially for war related purposes during World War One. Under the Apollo Program, Space Shuttle Program, Mars Exploration …show more content…
It lasted from 1961 to 1972 and included eleven spaceflight missions; six of them being moon landings. This project was introduced under President John F Kennedy during the cold war in efforts of beating the USSR in the race to land humans on the moon. With the Apollo program, Americans became the first humans to land and walk on the moon in 1969. During Apollo 11, Astronaut Neil Armstrong declared, “That’s one small step for man; one giant leap for mankind” (What was the Apollo Program?). He said this as he became the first human to walk on the moon. This quote can be interpreted as one man walking on a outer-atmospheric surface being a large life-changing event for humans scientifically and technologically. Buzz Aldrin was an astronaut in the Apollo 11 mission and the second human to walk on the moon. Buzz Aldrin expresses, “This has been far more than three men on a mission to the moon; more still than the efforts of a government and industry team; more, even, than that of the efforts of one nation. We feel this stands as a symbol of the insatiable curiosity of all mankind to explore the unknown” (Apollo Moon Mission Quotes). Buzz describes the Apollo mission as putting the United States, and mankind, at a turning point in history for scientific and technological advancements and will lead to greater achievements in the future. The Apollo missions served as a boost for …show more content…
Their goal was to find clues to ancient water activity on Mars by searching rocks and soils in craters. The rovers succeeded. Planetary Society President Jim Bell proclaims, “Both rovers found evidence of ancient, habitable environments along their traverse paths over the years, helping us to provide ‘ground truth’ for orbital remote sensing data, and substantially extending the capabilities and interpretations that we can gain from those orbital perspectives,” (The Mars Exploration Rovers Update: Mission Completes 14 Years of Exploring, Opportunity Roves into Year 15!). Bell describes how the rovers’ discoveries have impacted the knowledge humans hold today about Mars and how the knowledge couldn’t have been obtained without the evidence that the rovers found about water that used to be on Mars’s surface. The advanced technology seen within these twin rovers has brought the idea of previous life on Mars in its past and has led to more missions to find greater conclusions on this
