Originating in the early 1990s, Wu-Tang Clan is a hip hop group consisting of MC’s from Staten, New York, and is considered to be the most revolutionary hip hop group of the 90s. Wu-Tang was first started by GZA, RZA and ODB who at the time had called themselves ‘FOI: Force of the Imperial Master’ and had released a single. FOI had eventually evolved into Wu-Tang Clan with new members such as Method Man, Ghostface Killah, Masta Killa, Inspectah Deck, Raekwon, U-God and Cappadonna (WuTangCorp, 2006). Off their debut album “Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers)”, is one of their most popular tracks, “C.R.E.A.M” (Cash Rules Everything Around Me)(1993). C.R.E.A.M gives a vivid story on capitalism, poverty and drugs, on how individuals will try to “make it” by any means necessary. It also adds that many individuals will chase after money and materialistic objects but will soon face consequences for their greed. As all of the members of Wu-Tang grew up in poverty, Raekwon and Inspectah Deck had given their own personal stories on how they travelled on the wrong route. Back in the 1970s, New York had slipped into a major downfall where crime rates were high, pimps and prostitutes roamed the streets, many people lost their jobs, becoming homeless and there was a high rise of drugs (White, 2015). These social disorders had spread throughout the many boroughs of New York and had eventually reached Staten Island; home to the Wu-Tang Clan members.
