Hitler in Colour is a 2005 expository documentary film written and directed by David Batty. The film is based on letters and diary entries of those closely involved with the Nazi Regime. Following Hitler from his time as Chancellor until his death, the documentary covers the actions of a wartime Adolf Hitler. Unlike many other documentaries on Adolf Hitler, Hitler in Colour includes a section on the Holocaust bringing up one of the darkest periods of German history. As Hitler in Colour was produced in the United Kingdom, the intended audience is British citizens. This, however, is inevitable in the filmmaking process. One bias presented is that the film does not include the beginning of Hitler life and his subsequent rise to power. Skipping over such a large portion of his life does not allow the viewer to get a completely accurate picture of Hitler and his personality. Batty picks and choices which events to include and how much emphasis to place and each event. This alone is a significant bias allowing him to manipulate the audience’s opinions and feelings. Another bias presented is the voice actors Batty chooses to portray each character. The sound of each character including Hitler himself is very influential to the overall film. The most important piece of Hitler’s persona shown was his ability to manipulate others. This can be seen in numerous scenes, but one instance sticks out among the rest. This was when Hitler is shown manipulating David Lloyd George to think that he wanted peace and was a respectable politician. In addition, Hitler was able to convince the Western powers that he did not want war and was just regaining territory that was German in the first place. All the while, a war was Hitler’s end goal one which he had envisioned since his rise to power. This leads to the next aspect of Hitler’s personality that is how Hitler had an affinity for destruction and annihilation. During the war with the Soviet Union, Hitler ordered the complete demolition of territory taken over by German soldiers. He has a complete disregard for human life even that of Germans. When the USSR was closing in on Berlin, Hitler ordered the scorched-earth policy. This policy was to destroy everything to leave as little as possible is Germany was to be taken
